Let’s Get at This Again!

Hi friends,

I think it has been over a year since my last post.  Since life continues to keep on moving….I found myself with not too many exciting things to post about!  My mom continues to live a pretty incredible life with ALS.  Winter is always a little slow for us.  We are currently doggie sitting my sister’s dog Jack while she and her hubby live it up in Mexico!

My mom reached a milestone this last year as well.  10 years have passed since her ALS diagnosis.  It is hard to believe that we have been living as a family with ALS for a decade now.  My mom is one amazing and incredible woman!

We continue to have regular visits with my grandpa who is living in a memory care home down the road.  He is such a funny guy and always puts a huge smile on my mom’s face.  It is so nice having him near us.  We also attend monthly family nights that are a lot of fun and very interesting 🙂

Another huge moment this last year was the ALS Ice Bucket challenge!  The money raised was a dream come true.  We might just find a cure someday!  Thank you to all of our family and friends that participated.  It was fun that this remarkable challenge lined up with my mom’s 10 year ALS diagnosis.  It was a fun pick me up that put some new wind in our sails.

Picture Update!

I have about a million trillion pictures I could update you with since I have allowed a couple of months to pass again.  I think I will start with a small chunk dating back to September, and go from there!  My mom is still in great health.  She just keeps chugging along!  I try to get her out of the house at least 5 days a week….especially before the snow starts flying!  Shopping is still her favorite thing to do along with hanging out with her friends.  Here we go!

My cousin Shawna turned 15 in September!  She had a beautiful quincenera where my uncle escorted her in.  She looked absolutely beautiful!  At one point in the party she lit 15 candles to pass to the most influential people in her life until this point.  Mama Jules is her Godmother and was honored to get a candle.  I was also honored with a candle.  It brought me (and all of us) to tears!  We are so proud of you Shawna!  You have grown into a beautiful young woman!

And last but not least, Grandpa Eagle drove down to MN from UP Michigan to visit us.  At 97 years old, I don’t know how he does it!  It was so wonderful having him here!!!

ALS Walk 2013!

Hello Friends and Family!

Wow!  I have not written on this blog site in forever. I think my main reason for not writing as often, is that there has not been much to write about.  My mom has been out of the hospital for a couple of years now….and her health seems to be stable.  We haven’t seen any real changes positive or negative over the last few years.  I would say that we are just living life and getting out as much as possible!  I will try to make an effort to post pictures of some of the fun things we have been up to.  You name it, Mama Jules is out doing it!  We do still argue frequently about going shopping.  I Just can’t seem to keep Mama Jules out of Von Maur!  lol.  I can’t really complain….at least the lady still has passion!

We would like to invite all of our friends and family to join us on the ALS walk again this year!  If you cannot join us, any sort of donation would be greatly appreciated!  Like I always say…..the ALS Association has been WONDERFUL to our family.  We have definitely seen all of those dollars put to good use.

Here is the walk information this year:

Julie’s Eagle Wings

It is that time of year again!  Time for team “Julie’s Eagle Wings” to kick some ALS butt!  This is always a very special day for our friends and family.  It is this day once a year that we can pull together and show our support for “Mama Jule’s” and her amazing strength and inspiration.  The walk this year is 9/21/2013 at 10:00 am.  Sign in begins at 9:00!  We will be walking at the same location we did last year.

I am sure that it will be a blast!  Please join our team & help us battle ALS!  Even if you cannot walk, you can still join our team and be a virtual walker or make a donation.  Click the link below to Join us!

Christmas and New Years!

Well, the Christmas Season was a pretty busy and fun time for us!  We did many holiday activities this year….and I have so many pictures to share!  My mom’s health has continued to be great, which we are so thankful for.  Here are some pictures from what we have been up to!

First up, Jenna’s 6th Annual Christmas Cookie Party!  This party is always so much fun, and her friends are AWESOME!!

The following week we went down to Macy’s 8th floor to look at the Christmas Display with our friends Amy, Cheryl and Catey.  This is a tradition that my mom and Amy have been doing since my sister and Megan (Amy’s daughter) were little girls.  We continue the tradition every year followed by lunch at the sky room.

Later that week we were off to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Gurthrie.  My sister’s mother-in-law treated us to the show for Christmas.  We had the best handicap seats and all really enjoyed it!  This is another Minneapolis Christmas “Must”.

And now we have arrived to Christmas.  Christmas Eve we had family and friends over.  My brother Nathan was able to come over with his entire family as well.  This is the first year in FOREVER that we have all been together.  It was chaotic fun! Christmas day we opened presents in the morning and then headed over to my sister’s for Christmas dinner with her in-laws

New years eve, my brother and his wife got our family tickets to the Beach Boys.  My mom, dad, brother and I had such a great time at the concert.  I love a concert where you know all of the words and can sing along.  It brought back so many childhood memories.  Again, we had amazing handicap seats.  Thanks Nate and Souvanny!

And on a final note, my dad has been in Florida this past week, so it has been pretty much Mama Jules and myself.  We have kept ourselves busy hanging with friends, seeing movies and shopping with my sister.  My dad absolutely hates my sister’s puppy climbing on my mom, but when Rog is away, the girlies will play 🙂

Thanksgiving!

Ok, this post is way late….but I thought I would get our Thanksgiving pictures up before we head into Christmas.  Mama Jules is still doing great & enjoys picking out presents for her nearest and dearest this Christmas.  This past Thanksgiving, my mom’s brother Jeff and wife Sam had the entire family over.  It was a packed house & we had such a wonderful time.  We really cherish those holidays that we can all get together.  It is also great having my Grandpa Kast still here in MN with us.  He makes the gatherings complete!

Thank you Aunt Sam and Uncle Jeff for having us!  We are so Thankful for wonderful family!

The day before Thanksgiving my mom had her feeding tube replaced.  It didn’t go exactly as planned, but we made it through the day and were able to head home after.  When they pulled her tube out, a piece broke off and remained in her belly.  This turned into emergency surgery to go down and retrieve the piece before it travelled into her digestive tract.  After a little persuasion, the doctors allowed me to come into the OR to help communicate with my mom.  I told them that if they didn’t let me in….the would get some extremely mean faces from my mom.  Surgery went well and we headed off to recovery where we were stuck for a couple of hours.  Dad fell asleep of course, so we were able to get another Daddy Rog sleeping pic.

We are again thankful for a healthy mama Jules and a successful tube replacement!  We should be good for another year!

Living and Loving Life!

Hello everybody!  Time has flown by again and it is time for me to update the happenings of the Eagle family.  Mama Jules is doing fantastic and we are so thankful.  It has been about 9 months now since her last bout with Cellulitis.  The hospital is becoming a distant memory!  Yay!

Our entry brings us all the way back to September.  September is a crazy birthday month for us.  I feel like I was celebrating every weekend!!  This includes my own birthday!  Woot Woot!  My nephew Julian’s bday is a couple of days before me…so we headed over to Brooklyn Center as a family to have a little pizza party.  Brooklyn Center has the last Rocky Rococo’s in MN and it has always been a family favorite.  Mmmmmm……Pizza……..

Julian (birthday boy) and Jordan

Family pic. This was after 5 attempts. Getting a bunch of guys to smile naturally at the camera is harder than I thought!

Jenna and the birthday boy

I just LOVE my nephews!  They are such wonderful boys!!

So, that weekend I went out for a little birthday celebration for myself with some besties.  We got a hotel room and headed over the Nye’s in NE Minneapolis for a night on the town!  I felt very loved this birthday and always appreciate the love from my family and friends.  It always makes getting older a little easier!

Thanks girls for a fun night!

A couple of days later our friend Amy took me out to Pairings for a birthday lunch!  Pairings has become a favorite around here!  Thank you Amy!

Group pic to prove just how much fun we are having! haha

My mom and I got our flu shots from my Brother in Law Ross.  He makes sure we always get the preservative free! He probably thinks I am crazy for documenting the moment…but we had fun!

yay!

Next up…..Grandpa Eagle came to town for a weekend visit.  He is 95 years old and still makes the 10 hour drive from the U.P. to come and see us.  We always love having him.  He is such a cutie!

Gramps and the girls

A couple of weekends ago Jenna headed to Hollywood to visit a college friend that she danced with.  She had a great time and appreciated a girlie weekend away!

Next up: Halloween.  My mom and I went over to my Grandpa’s assisted living home for their Halloween Happy Hour.  I knew that they would be dressing up…so we picked up a witch headband for my gramps.  He was reluctant at first, but eventually embraced it.  The party was fun & we got to listen to a polka band.  My grandpa LOVES music, so he was in heaven.  It is fun to see the older people singing to their favorite songs.  I think my mom and I fit in pretty well over there!

I managed to make it to a Halloween party of my own.  So fun!

Jenna and Ross dressed Jack up as a rufferee.  This picture is too cute not to throw in!

Doesn’t he just steal your heart?

And I think that we will end on that adorable note.  My mom and I are off to meet some friends at Green Mill.  We hope that everybody gets out and votes tomorrow!  My mom and I will be hitting the poles.  If we can…..you can!  And if you live in Minnesota:

Picture Diary

Hello friends!  Ok, it has been forever since I have given an update & so much has been happening!  I thought that I would provide a little picture diary since pictures are so much more fun to look at than reading pages and pages.  Here are some bits and pieces!

First off, in August I went to Missouri to meet up with 2 close friends from college.  We had such a great time!  I am lucky to have such amazing friends in my life.  My sister and dad stepped up to the plate to help with Mama Jules.  Everything went great while I was away!

Heather, Teresa and I first night out!

Second day out at the winery!

Haha. We are so funny!

Thanks girls for a great weekend!!

Next up, Jenna and Ross got a new puppy named Jackson!  He is a bundle of fun & energy.  He is also super cute!!!

Jackson’s first day home!

Jackson on Mama Jule’s lap!

The cutie family

Jackson and his auntie Kelly!

Thank you for bringing new-found fun to our lives Jackson!

A few weeks ago my friend Susan was in town.  She has been living in Chile for a couple of years now…so it is always great to see her when she is in the states.  I have known Susan since I was four years old!

Susan spent the day with my mom and I. We took Jules on a long walk & then off to Costco!

2 weeks ago my mom and I got our haircut from my cousin Lindsay.  This isn’t a new experience for us…but I captured a cute pic this time!

Lindsay cutting Mama Jules hair!

Lindsay works at the Beauty Room in Minneapolis & does a great job!  Check her out!

The next day we met my friend Renee at MOA to do some walking and window shopping with her little boy Nolan.  He is such a cutie!  I have known Renee since the day I was born.  I used to watch her roll over with envy 🙂

Grabbing a coffee at MOA with Renee & Nolan

The next day we went to my cousin Lindsay’s house to meet her new baby Ike.  My aunt and uncle were there too….so we had a little impromptu outdoor party!

Lindsay and Baby Ike

Enjoying the weather at Lindsay and Jared’s!

Myself and Baby Ike!

A couple of weeks ago my mom and I headed over to my brother’s house to take the boys to the park.  We don’t head over to his house very often because we cannot get the wheelchair inside & he lives about a half hour away.  With his crazy work schedule, we were able to find time for a little visit.  The boys are growing up so fast & they are both very sweet.  I am a proud auntie!

Nathan, Jordan & Julian

And that brings us to Labor Day weekend.  My mom and I enjoyed the weather and went on two very long walks.  My dad finished re-painting the deck and back of house.  My mom and I just hung out.  It was pretty un-eventful.  We did take my Grandpa to Houlihan’s on Labor day & had a lot of laughs.  We are quite a comical group between the five of us.

Jenna and gramps.

Myself

And that is about it for now!  We are gearing up for fall around here & hope to have another fantastic winter like last year.  Fingers crossed!

Also, please refer to the next post if you would like to join our team for the ALS walk!  It is September 22nd this year & we always have a great time!  Thank you to those that have signed up to join us.  And thank you also for the generous donations!!  We are looking forward to another wonderful walk!

Julie’s Vacation!

This last weekend we had the pleasure of bringing Mama Jules up to the Narloch’s cabin.  The Narloch’s are my sister’s in-laws & they have a gorgeous cabin up north at Fifty Lakes on Fox Lake.  We made this trip last year, and re-lived the experience again!  We are able to do this because Brainard Medical supply allows us to rent a hospital bed and hoyer lift.  They even deliver!  Here is a little photo journal of our “mini” adventure.

We got the car packed to the brim with medical supplies & shoved dad in the back.  Jenna and Ross were in the car ahead of us.

Dad doesn’t look thrilled about his lack of room. I love mom’s smile here! We are off!

The drive should have been about 2 1/2 hours, but I ran over a nail at some point and we got a flat tire.  So, we had to change the tire to a donut.  We were not thrilled about the idea since we weighed so much with the car being packed to the brim (mom’s wheelchair weighs 500 lbs alone) but it worked out in the end!

Tire is changed!

Jenna made me re-take the picture because she said she is the exciting part

We are fun!

After arriving 1/2 hour later at the Narloch’s we unloaded all of our gear, got settled & enjoyed a wonderful dinner!  Mom made it 9 hours in her wheelchair this day.   That was a crazy long time for her!

Dinner is served!

After dinner it was time to get mom back into bed & dad to take a little nap.  Sleeping pictures of my dad are a classic must have.

Ahh. So comfortable

Dad showing us how it is done

The next day we relaxed by the lake, went into town for a bit & enjoyed water sports!

Jenna got her first bee sting. That was drama filled!

Mom had a great view of the lake

After dinner that night we drove down to a local resort to watch the sun set and have some drinks.  Worked out great!
