First of all, thank you to all of you that have shown an interest in my new blog! The positive feedback has been amazing & I am touched that so many of you even care to check out our day-to-day happenings.
Yesterday was a good day. My mom had her weekly bio-feedback session & everything looked pretty good. One positive change that we have seen lately is a reduction in the amount of phlegm that my mom has had. For a month or so we have been deep suctioning my mom like crazy & pulling up large amounts of secretions. My only conclusion was that she had some sort of cold. The past 2 days I have only had to deep suction her once or twice a day! Yes! ok, back to yesterday. Amy Rasmussen came over in the afternoon & we had a fun chat & caught up on all of the latest happenings. Mom & I were also able to get our Christmas Card order sent in. Always a thing that I look forward to doing each year! It is so much fun to send & receive them.
Today our nurse came over to check mom’s stats. All good as usual! Catey also came over to help us out like she does every week. Jenna came over this afternoon so I could do her hair & makeup. She has her first swarm photo shoot today for their yearly calender, website & promotional media. Kind of exciting! She was a little nervous because this is her first professional team, and most of the other girls have been through it before. I am sure that she will do great! She is there right now….so we will let you know. She will be selling calendars for next year so let us know if you would be interested!
Jenna's new swarm team after auditions!
It looks like the snow should be stopping soon….so we hope to get out shopping tomorrow. There is just too much to do! We haven’t purchased as much online this year as we usually do. Christmas will be here before we know it!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued healing of her bed sore
Thankful: I am thankful for my break! I am on break right now…and loving it! haha
Jenna & her friend Kailee with my mom last year
Well, lets see. It has been a pretty nice & relaxing couple of days here at home. Relaxing aside from the quick shopping trip Jenna & I took mom on to Target yesterday. It was a complete zoo! Since my dad had gotten another tree, we decided to pick out some new decorations. Bad decision! I think that my mom & I will be Christmas shopping while everybody is at work from now on. We were going to go to Michael’s first, but there wasn’t even a place to park there. So, I might have to declare Christmas season as “not wheelchair friendly”. haha. I know that this week will be easier. My mom has also continued having fun online shopping & QVC shopping. I have become pretty thankful for those ways to shop!
Last night I got together with a couple of friends to celebrate my super duper wonderful friend Dana’s birthday! We went to Cafe Maude off of Penn Avenue. That place is awesome! If you have never been…..I highly recommend it! We had yummy wine, appetizers and conversation. Just what Kelly needed! I was back by 10:30 so I was able to enjoy some alone time as well. I just love my nights off!
Today my mom and I watched the Vikings game & decorated our other tree. The Vikings pulled out a win….so we were very excited! Our $400 “Vita-Mix” blender has been gradually breaking & finally died on us today. RIP Vita-Mix! This is the machine that I blend all of my mom’s food in, so it is highly important to us. We have had our Vita-Mix for about 7 years & ran the thing into the ground. We use it twice a day for pretty lengthy periods of time. It was so worth the money! So, I ended up pulling out our cheaper back up blender to make my mom’s food. All seemed well until I lifted the container off the stand & the thing fell apart. We had blended chicken, orange juice, baby food bananas & milk powder all over the counter & floors! Yuck! Dad ended up running out to buy another blender, so mom didn’t end up eating until 3:00. I don’t think that she even cared. Her meals aren’t anything to really get excited about. In the end, it really made us appreciate the wonderful years of service our Vita-Mix gave to our family. It’s replacement won’t arrive until next week. Darn!
That is it for tonight! I look forward to bringing you the exciting happenings of our next few days! haha
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued healing of her bed sore. The thing is back to looking a little worse. Stupid thing!
Thankful: We know what this is! I am thankful for our Vita-Mix!
I hope that everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with Joy & Love! The Eagle family had a great day remembering those things that we are thankful for. Jenna gave me the night off on Wednesday, so I was excited to be rested for our big day yesterday. We had gotten a nice chunk of fresh snow on the ground from the day before. Nothing as dangerous as the previous weekend, so traveling was not much of a problem. We went to our friend’s home on Thanksgiving like we do every year. We go to the Lantz’s & are joined by the Omlie’s and a few other people who may not have relatives in the area. Jane & Brad do an amazing job putting a Thanksgiving feast together for all of us. We always ask what we can bring, but they insist that they just need us to make cupcakes. How lucky are we? There are not many people who get away with hardly needing to make anything on Thanksgiving. Thank you so much Jane & Brad! We had a wonderful time!
I think that my dad was missing his mom a little bit yesterday, because he asked my mom if she would want to wear a brooch from his mother’s jewelry box. Grandma Eagle passed away a little over a year ago & my dad loved her so much (as did we all!). I went upstairs & picked out a pretty blue sparkly brooch that matched her cashmere sweater. My dad was all smiles when he saw that she was wearing it. I thought that it was really sweet. He was also excited when my mom received many compliments over the vintage piece. It turned out to be a great idea. It made me realize the importance of being sentimental & remember those that are no longer with us. My dad always teaches us this important lesson. If you go down to his home office, you will see all of the little notes, drawings, cards & essays from when we were little kids until now. I love that our dad has such a tender heart.
Jenna, Dad & I on Thanksgiving
Today my mom and I are avoiding the shopping crowds by QVC shopping. Every year, after Thanksgiving, my mom insists that we keep QVC on most of the day. We have gotten some really great stuff in the past, but they can sell snow to an Eskimo. After watching for 10 minutes, you feel you need everything. It is funny how exciting they make every little product seem. We have learned to hold back for all of the really good stuff. My dad is out shopping with the rest of the crazy people. He decided that he wanted another tree for our living room because he misses seeing it through the window from outside. So that gives me another tree to decorate! Luckily I really enjoy doing it. I think that mom & I will go shopping for more decorations tomorrow.
My mom’s facial muscles have been doing really well the past couple of days & her energy has been really good. I wonder if she had previously had a cold or something. I am just glad that she is back! I am also glad that she had a really great day on Thanksgiving. There is just so much to be thankful for!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued strength in those facial muscles
Thankful: Thankful for a wonderful & peaceful Thanksgiving
Parents Weekend my first year in college
So, mom and I were stuck inside again today due to weather. Such a bummer. We made the most of it & got a bunch of stuff done. I made a chinese chicken salad, wrapped some Christmas Presents, washed mom’s hair & got her up into her chair. Jenna stopped over after work today & we all had yummy salad for dinner. Jenna’s Swarm practice was cancelled due to weather conditions, so she ended up going to yoga instead in EP. It was fun to get to hang out with her! We didn’t see her all weekend :(.
My mom has also discovered a love for ice chips. We have found that they are easy to feed to her & they make her so happy! This requires me to stand by her bedside for a half an hour since she wants more & more. If it makes her happy, it is worth it! Such a simple thing…who would have ever though?
Mom & I will be getting our hair cut tomorrow. My cousin will be going on maternity leave soon & had a completely booked schedule. We are very excited to have snuck in our appointments & won’t be missing it!
That is about it for today. Not too exciting of a day……but it held a lot of love 🙂
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued energy in those facial muscles
Thankful: I am thankful for funny YouTube videos. I love plopping my laptop in front of my mom & seeing her laugh :).
Hey Peeps! I am sorry that I have been a little distant the last few days. I don’t even have a good reason! I need some inspiration people!
Friday “mama Jules” & I decided it was a shopping day. Well, she decided it was a shopping day. I wanted to go to a movie since I am trying to make it a Friday tradition. But shopping was ok too. We somehow ended up at Kohl’s Power Hour. That place has crazy good deals that I cannot believe. And the discounts somehow just keep on coming when you are there. I highly recommend opening a charge card as well! That is the only one that I have from a department store…and it is worth it! Does anybody else share my same Kohl’s passion out there? And did I mention how cute their Christmas stuff is?
Yesterday my Godmother Mary (I am sure you all know who she is! Love her!) came over for a nice long visit. She always brings us a pile of magazines that she gets from a flight attendant that picks them up off the airplanes. Another great way for mom & I to get our trashy entertainment scoop! Thanks Mary! Then mom and I spent the afternoon watching Lifetime movies. Those things are so addicting!!! I had the evening off (given to me from my dad), so I was able to get some errands done before the ice storm came in. I have heard from multiple people today that have been in minor car wrecks or were stuck. Ice can sometimes be worse than snow! I am glad that nobody was hurt!
Jenna & Ross in front of out tree last year!
Today my mom & I watched the Vikings game on TV. I cannot say that it was a very exciting game. Kind of depressing. My mom will continue watching anyway! Love my little sports fan! I spent the rest of the afternoon putting up our Christmas tree. I have talked to several people who have put their’s up, so I figured we would too! It always makes my mom and I feel happier when we see that snow coming down. Jenna & Ross had an early Thanksgiving with Ross’ family today. They will be up north for the actual holiday, and Ross is on call….so we get to keep the kiddies close to home! Yay!
That is it for now! Don’t give up on me…I will keep blogging!
Thank you for the love! xoxo
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued energy in her facial muscles. They have seemed a bit tired lately
Thankful: I am thankful for the beauty of a Christmas Tree & the warm feeling it gives me in my heart. Ahhhhhh…….
Let’s see people…what have we been up to. Yesterday my mother’s nurse stopped over for an INR check & then we got some medical supplies delivered! Yay! Jenna’s mother in law (Louann) came over in the afternoon to visit with my mom and I. She always brings me a latte & I love her for that. Thanks Louann! We caught up with everything going on around here & discussed our sharing Ross & Jenna for the holidays. Looks like everything is going to work out well! My dad came home early from work because Eden Prairie has a person coming out to inspect everybody’s homes to make sure sump-pumps are installed correctly & water run-off is not going into the sewers. Since our pump is in my bedroom, I had to do a thorough cleaning. We wouldn’t want them to condemn our home! haha. Just kidding. I don’t sleep in my room very often, so it has really become a quick changing room for me. I tend to spend most of my free time in the other basement rooms. Now you know! 🙂
Today was fun. Jenna had given me last night off, so I was well rested. My mom’s brother Jeff stopped over after I had gotten done making my mom’s food. We tried calling my grandpa when he was over because nobody seems to hear from him since he moved back down to FL. Their phone has not been set up. Luckily, it was the one time he answered his cell phone & we were able to have a nice chat with him. It looks like everything is going well for them. After Jeff came over, our friend Amy stopped by for her weekly visit. So, I was pretty much talking all day & now have a very tired throat. No worries…we had fun & that is all that matters!
Jenna’s dental office has a special offer on Groupon if you are interested in teeth whitening for a great deal! It also makes a great Christmas present! http://www.groupon.com/deals/merry-dental-care-minneapolis?c=dnb&p=1
Check it out! I believe that this will be offered again in 2 weeks as well.
That is about it for today. I hope that everybody is having a great week! Tomorrow is Friday!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued strength & healing
Thankful: I am thankful for getting ahold of my grandpa & knowing he is doing well!
Mom with Dr. Foy. She was ok, I promise!
Today my mom went to the dentist! It has been about a year and a half since we have gone. It is tough for my mom because she has a hard time opening her mouth and when we pull it open, it doesn’t go very wide because those muscles are not often stretched. My dad found a dentist for my mom a couple of years ago that specializes in wheelchair patients with all sorts of diseases/disabilities. It is pretty cool! We met another ALS patient when we were in the waiting room. This is very rare for us, so we were very interested in talking with her. She said that she had ALS for 8 years and spoke with a keyboard that spoke her words. She was able to still used her hands…but could not talk. It was nice to discuss with her and her husband the way that ALS has affected us differently. Anyway, things went well with my mom. We were able to get x-rays done, and everything looked good. My mom was concerned that her teeth were loose, but the doctor put those fears aside by assuring her that they look great. After an hour of jamming her mouth open, my mom was done and very relieved!
I went to dinner with a couple of friends tonight & then had a nice long talk with a friend I have not spoken to in a couple of years. Time really flies! It was very nice to re-connect after all this time. Jenna was supposed to give me the rest of the night off….but her hubby called her to tell her he wasn’t feeling well. She asked me if she could go home and take care of him, and of course I said yes! She will try giving me the night off again tomorrow. Cross your fingers!
That is it! Not too exciting…but exciting for us!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for her not having a sore mouth tomorrow after all that pulling & probing today!
Thankful: I am thankful for my Keurig! It has been 2 weeks…and I just LOVE that thing!
Let me tell you….I am exhausted! It has been a busy day. First of all, as most people know, we had a HUGE snowstorm here in MN yesterday. It sounds like lots of people in the area were without power, but we were lucky. We are always thankful when it is not us, because we need the power for my mom’s vent & not to mention entertainment (TV) as well. My dad plowed yesterday but only got half done before the thing died on him. I think he enjoyed himself though! My dad also had to go to Jenna’s dental office to save the three ladies whose cars were stuck. Jenna said that he saved the day! Go Rog!
Today we threw a Baby Shower for my cousin Lynzy at my Aunt Sam’s house. This required us getting up early (well, early for us) so I could bake a danish, wash my mom’s hair, get her ready, get myself ready & get all of the piles of goodies together. We had a wonderful time & everything went so well! Lynzy looked adorable with her little bowling ball belly. It was also a special day because we got to hang out with Pat Kast (she has been a grandma to us growing up). We don’t get to see her often, so it is always special when we do.
I now find myself tired & with a sore throat. My tonsils have been pretty inflamed for the last week…and it seems to be getting worse. Hopefully this problem will solve itself. It is just wearing me down a little. I have a history of tonsilitus…so this isn’t too new to me. Maybe it is time to get the things removed? Wish I had the time for that! Who would take care of me? haha
Ladies of the Kast Family!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued strength and healing. She did awesome today!
Thankful: I am so thankful for time spent with family!! And I am always thankful for a baby shower!
My mom, dad, sister & I in Puerto Rico back in the day..
This is going to be a quick post! It has been a pretty long & busy day for all of us. We just got back from the movie “Morning Glory”. It was excellent! I loved looking over & seeing my mom with a huge smile on her face & seeing her laugh. Makes everything about my life worth it :). Jenna & dad were able to come along with us as well. I love some good family time. My brother Nathan is never able to come along with us because he works such odd hours. He does exist though! I promise! I had a nice long chat with him on the phone last night & all seems to be going well in his life. If he is getting overtime at work…he is one happy man!
We also got a surprise visit from Pastor Roger today. He said that he was near our home…so he stopped by. It was nice to see him as always & I got my communion in! Last night I was able to go out to dinner with a friend, so overall it has been a very fun & busy week!
After the movie tonight we headed over to Jason’s deli. It wasn’t the greatest choice for a Friday night, but it was our best possibility for a not too busy “wheelchair friendly” place to go. They made up for it (to my dad) with the free ice cream. Thank goodness for that!
That is all for now. I will try to update more tomorrow!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued strength and energy
Thankful: I am thankful for a fantastic movie that makes my mom laugh! Love it!
My first time meeting Renee's baby Nolan
I just got back from Book Club & got all of my baby cuddles & sweet baby smells in. Two of our book club members had babies within the last 2 months. So exciting & completely adorable! I hope to bring my mom over to meet my friend Renee’s baby very soon. Renee and I have known each other since I was born, so it is fun to see her entering this new phase of her life. Baby Nolan is a complete cutie!
Aside from Book Club, today was a very good day. My mom’s friend Jane May came over for a nice long visit. We don’t get to see her too often because she lives in both MN and NC. It is always fun to catch up with those friends that we don’t see very often because there is so much to catch up on! We were also able to visit with her husband and granddaughter at the end when they stopped by. Thanks you guys for coming over!
Andrea's baby Trygve
Jenna is here giving me the night off this evening. She watched my mom while I was out tonight & now they are getting settled in for bed. My dad is still up doing bills because he took way too long of a nap after work today. I think that his sleep schedule is completely crazy & he is having a hard time getting into a routine. He says that he can’t stop waking up around 3:30 & is not able to go back to sleep. Poor daddy. He will get his own prayer today! 🙂
That is all! Thanks for checking in!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for continued strength and energy
Prayer for Roger: Pray for a consistent sleep schedule that will satisfy his resting needs
Thankful: I am thankful for our new book club babies! Love them already!
