It has been a crazy past week here at the Eagle household! As I posted earlier, my dad had surgery for a double hernia last Friday. Everything went well….but we ended up being at the hospital for 12 hours. His recovery took a little longer than expected. Since we got to the hospital around 5:00 AM, I was exhausted from such a long day. Jenna took care of our mom while dad and I were at the hospital. Life certainly changes around here when you have 2 parents that need to be taken care of. Over the next couple of days I helped take care of my dad and mom. He is back to functioning and moving around. He will be heading back to work tomorrow. One challenge will be that he cannot lift anything over 10 pounds for about 4-6 weeks. This will be a challenge on my nights off when he needs to roll my mom by himself. I might have to help him out a little more. But we are happy that he is recovering and all went well! We plan to keep him operation free for a long time going forward!
Pretty cute patient!
Today my mom and I went to see “Friends with Benefits” with my Godmother Mary. It was a perfect day for a movie since it was so muggy out. The movie was great on top of it! I know that my mom was happy to be out.
It looks like Jenna and Ross will be closing on their house this Friday. We are excited to have them all settled and moved in so we can get Mama Jules inside! She has only seen pictures & can’t wait to get in there. We had to order her a 10 foot portable ramp that we will keep there for her. Congratulations Ross & Jenna!
That is about all I can think of for now. We have been getting out for some walks & enjoying everybody that has come over to visit! Thank you for all of the love and support! It is nice to have our house back to normal again!!
Jenna & Mama Jules giving each other some loving
As most people in the country know….we are having a heat wave! I don’t have much to report about Mama Jules because we have been stuck in the house. We were supposed to go to my sister’s house the other day, but decided against it when they showed all of the Twin’s fans wiping sweat off their faces on TV. She came over to our house instead & brightened my mom’s spirits. I was able to take my mom out for a drive last Friday, and that has been about it. We are counting the days until we can get out walking again. This has been tough! We have been passing the time by reading a bunch and watching TV. I am happy to report that my mom has been doing great since her surgery last week. She shows no signs of infection (something we always fear when she is hospitalized) & her peg tube incision looks completely healed! Yay!
My dad will be having double hernia surgery on Friday, so we will be adding another parent to the “take care of” list. It is a same day surgery & he should be moving about within a few days. He is always bummed when things happen that slow him down, but it is better to get the problem taken care of now. Jenna will come over to take care of my mom, while I go with my dad to the hospital. I think we have to be there at 5:00 am….so you know I will be in pain! I will let you know how all of that goes!
On a positive note, Jenna and Ross will be closing on a new house next week! We have really enjoyed watching them go through the buying process. Jenna would always forward me the MLS listings they were looking at….and then my mom and I would go drive by them! I think that my mom and I both share a love of Real Estate. We drive out to their new home often to check out how the building process is going. It will be so much fun seeing it completed next week. Congrats Ross & Jenna!
And that is all I have to share for this week so far. Thank you for checking in with us!
As most of my Facebook friends know….my mom has been in the hospital the last few days & is now home safe and sound. Many people have been asking what exactly happened, so I thought I would fill you in! I was out-of-town last weekend (I will write more about that towards the end..so keep reading!). When I was gone everything went really well with my sister & dad taking care of my mom. At one point my mom’s feeding tube got plugged, so my sister had to replace the tube with a new one. This is something we do every few months so it isn’t too big of a deal. Over the next couple of days the feeding tube was a little bit loose & popped out a couple of times. The feeding tube has a balloon that is inflated inside my mom’s stomach after the tube is placed so it doesn’t pop out. It appears that we were given a faulty tube & over time the balloon was gradually deflating. Over those couple of days my dad & sister would catch it when it fell out and pop it back in so it wasn’t really a big deal. We didn’t realize at that time that we had a bad tube. What eventually ended up happening was….my dad rolled my mom at 3:00 am on Sunday evening & did not notice that the tube fell out. When he pulled back the covers around 9:00 am the tube was laying next to her in bed. Not good! At that point my mom’s hole had completely closed up & there was no way to get it back in. I was at the Chicago Airport with my friends waiting for our flight home when I got the call from my dad. I had just been thinking about how I hoped my mom would let me nap that afternoon after my long fun weekend out in the sun. I was exhausted! When I talked to my dad we both knew where we would be headed…..to the hospital.
Over the next couple of days…my mom was given an IV since she was no longer able to get any nourishment, her veins were poked and prodded for blood-work, and she was given plasma to get her INR (blood thickness) levels down so she wouldn’t bleed internally from the procedure. On Tuesday my mom had her new tube put in. They were able to do the surgery in her ICU room which was pretty cool. I got to be in there since my mom can only communicate with me. It was pretty interesting to watch. My mom did great with the anesthesia & once again proved how strong she is. When she finally came around….she didn’t even look like anything had happened to her. (they place the tube by going down her throat into the stomach with a camera & tubes). She was smiling & had no pain whatsoever. So, after we all let out a sigh of relief…..we were able to spend another night under observation & head home the next day. Things are back to normal now & mom is doing great! If you are wondering what a feeding tube looks like….here you go! (it is not my mom BTW)
This is pretty much what my mom's tube looks like....but her tummy is way cuter! haha
Ok, so now on to the fun stuff. Before all of this crazy hospital stuff happened….I went to Chicago with my good friends Catey & Lindsay for the Dave Mathews Band Caravan & Twin’s/White Sox game. We had a great time & the weather was perfect! I was gone Friday – Monday….which I had not done in years. I thought I would share a few pictures with y’all
Day 1 at the concerts! Fun venue but in a horrible part of town
Yay For Dave Mathews!
Day 2 heading over to the Twin's/White Sox Game on the L. Catey and Lindsay all geared up in their Twin's best!
We had great seats (in the baking sun) at the game
Cabbing it on day 3 to the concerts (DMB Caravan). Catey loved pulling out her farting machine in public places.
I met up with my sorority sister Julie Juergens & had a great time catching up with her!
Dave surprised the audience at the Emmylou Harris concert to introduce her. Emmylou's concert was awesome & a highlight from the weekend!
Had to get a pic in front of the sign
And that is about all of the pictures that I had on my camera. As you can see…we had a great time! It was nice to have a fun girlie weekend before a 3 day stay in the hospital. I am glad that everything went well…..and we are all back home safe and sound. Thank you everybody that has contacted us, prayed for us & sent positive energy our way! I have read my mom every message that was sent & posted. They meant so much to her & she couldn’t be more thankful (along with all of us). xoxo to you all!
Getting ready for what? Well…..I am heading out-of-town for a long weekend. And when Kelly is out-of-town, that leaves Roger, Jenna & Julie to fend for themselves. This really isn’t too hard since we all take care of my mom together. It just gets a little difficult when my sister & dad have to do things that they are not used to doing. I can do things in a matter of minutes because of the constant repetition. I have pretty much learned the fastest way to do most things. And I have all of the food recipes & pill/supplements memorized…since it is always my job. I always really appreciate when they pull together to give me a vacation! I will miss them a ton as always. My mom feels like my Siamese twin sometimes. I feel like we are connected.
So, where am I going? I am heading to Chicago with my friends Catey & Lindsay for a bunch of outdoor concerts (DMB Caravan) and a Twin’s/White Sox game. I know my mom will be watching the game on tv! The ladies & I went to Chicago 2 years ago & had a crazy fun time…so I am pretty sure it will be the same. I have been looking forward to it for quite some time now. I always love my girls weekends! You know that I will have pictures to share!
We hope that everybody had a great holiday weekend. Ours was very nice and low-key. We did the usual stuff. Grilled out, went on walks, went on drives and did a little shopping. One fun thing that I got to do was go to brunch with my friends Susan & Dana. Susan has been getting her MBA in Chile for the last year and a half….so we don’t get to see her very often. Hopefully she will come back to the states when she is done with school this December, but you just never know with Susan. We will just have to wait and see!
Susan, Dana & I (Missed you Kate!)
And that pretty much sums up all that we have been doing. My mom and I just got back from running errands & now I get to do some time on the treadmill! Thank you for checking in!
Prayer for Julie: Pray for a peaceful and easy weekend for my family while I am away this weekend!
We want to wish everybody a safe and happy 4th of July holiday weekend! We don’t have any big and crazy plans around here. The heat has been very steamy….so I think that my mom and I are heading to the movies tomorrow. It has become too hot for walking. Jenna & Ross will be heading up North to the Narloch Cabin on Saturday. As most of you know….up North is Minnesota’s Hampton’s come summer time. The traffic can get crazy with everybody leaving the cities on weekends to head to their cabin’s & summer homes.
This week has been pretty fun for us. My mom and I have been on several walks & and hung out with friends. Today my mom’s friend Jane May came over! We had not seen her in about a year….so it was fun catching up! We have also visited with Dori Herman, Amy Rasmussen & Jane Lantz this week. Mama Jules just loves her friends! Yesterday we headed over to the Arboredum to walk around a little bit. Things are really growing & the gardens are beautiful!
Pretty view from the Japanese Garden
Aren't we having fun? Not sure if mom was too excited to take this pic..
Another fun thing that we tried out this week was “Eye Gaze” technology. This is a computer device that would allow my mom to select words & spell by using her eyes. It was pretty interesting! By the time we got things moving along & my mom was understanding the device…her eyes starting pooping out on us. We are going to have another session next week to see how it goes with a little more practice. It was very cool & my mom found it very interesting. I think that she also found it mentally stimulating….which was very nice for her! I will keep you updated as to how our next session goes.
Everybody have a great weekend & Happy 4th of July! God Bless America!!
